Note that your elbows should never be placed higher than your elbows as this would compress nerve structures in the shoulder. Pull the belly button into the spine and keep the chin tucked and retracted. Slowly lower your body symmetrically towards the floor then press back up.

The Pull UP

Pull ups are completely different to the conventional Lat pulldown machine. The recruitment of muscles are different. It is a tough exercise and a big calorie burner. To be able to pull your own bodyweight up is a great show of physical strength and muscular co-ordination. It is a fantastic exercise for the big Latissimus Dorsi muscle which is the only muscle in the body to connect from the pelvis, spine and shoulders. As it crosses so many joints it is a great stabiliser of the upper and lower body.

25-Nov-09 13:38

The most popular and incorrectly performed exercise!

The sit up if performed on the floor is a great exercise to tone the abs, strengthen the neck and create stability to the pelvis and spine. The abdominal musculature creates rotational movements to the torso and helps bend the spine forwards and decelerates the spine from bending backwards. The sit up or crunch must be performed by curling the spine forwards rather than maintaining a straight back.
